4 Day Design Sprint

What does a 4-day Design Sprint look like?

At Lifely we adopted the 4-Day Design Sprint process, sometimes called Design Sprint 2.0. This adaption of the original 5-Day Design Sprint tries to make a Design Sprint a little less demanding on your time. But it still keeps the advantages of the Design Sprint process; creating focus, aligning disciplines, and delivering a validated solution.

Less demanding on your time means it requires you to be present the first full two days of the sprint, instead of five full days. After that, you can check in during the creation of the prototype and user testing.

So, what does a 4-Day Design Sprint look like?

team

The Sprint team

Design Sprints are run as a team. The team brings together all the disciplines required to solve the problem. Working as a team they combine their different insights, work out their differences, and arrive at a joint solution.

A team will have a size of up to 7 people. These are the people that are involved during the whole sprint. Besides this team, we interview a few experts from within your organisation. This will take about 30 minutes for each expert.

Below are the roles that need to be present in the sprint team. Depending on your organisation, multiple roles can be filled by 1 person. Or you might want to invite two people to cover one role.

The team composition:

From your organisation:
The decision-maker. For example the CEO, founder or product manager.
The financial expert. For example the CEO, financial director or business development manager.
The customer expert. Someone who has regular personal contact with customers.

From your organisation or Lifely, depending on the available skills within your organisation:
The technical specialist. For example the technical director, or a programmer.
The design specialist. For example a designer or a product manager.

From Lifely:
The facilitator. The supervisor of the Design Sprint process.

The Sprint process

Sprint preparation

Before running the actual sprint, we start preparing it. We do a substantive intake with 2 or 3 people from your organisation. Based on this intake, we determine the composition of the team and which experts to invite.
We also prepare more practical things, like finding the right date and location for the sprint, and recruiting the test subjects.

Sprint day one

Together we start by listening to a few real experts on the subject of the sprint. We use this information and the sprint team’s own knowledge to get a clear view of the challenges.

When the challenges are clear, we start sketching solutions. Using the design sprint structure, everyone will be able to come up with sketches for possible solutions.

Sprint day two

The last workshop day starts by finalising our sketches. Now it’s time to curate them. Following the Design Sprint method, we combine all the best elements. With them we create a storyboard of the solution, that will form the basis of our prototype. This finishes up the workshop part.

Sprint day three

Now our creatives start working on the prototype. We’ll check in with you during the day, and by the end of the day the prototype is ready to be tested.

Sprint day four

On the last day we will test the prototype with 5 test subjects from your target audience. We will validate if they can use the product, and if it helps them solve their problem.

Sprint evaluation

After running the sprint and getting some sleep, we’ll evaluate it together with you, and determine the next steps.

In this download, we try to give you an insight into the differences between a Design Sprint and the conventional design process. We will compare them on speed, time commitment, cost, and applicability in different situations. This will give you insights into their benefits, downsides, and what they require from you.
